What Is It?
Forget dropping breadcrumbs to mark your route: the LiveTrekker app automatically records your journey via your iPhone, iPad or Android device. LiveTrekker syncs GPS with visual and written documentation to bring your trip to life on a gorgeous multi-media map. It creates a hybrid product that’s part Google Earth, part interactive itinerary, part fitness tracker and part blog + diary + scrapbook.
How Does It Work?
Simply verify your email address to start using LiveTrekker. We suggest playing with the app before taking off so that you can become familiar with the software as well as create your profile and link it to your social and email accounts so that your friends can follow along. You also may want to tweak the settings—toggle the “right-handed” feature depending on your dominant digits to make certain buttons easier to access.
Another perk of playing around on the app before you jet is that you can score inspiration on the “Discover” tab. Get your gears turning about innovative ways to use LiveTrekker’s tools for out-of-the-box storytelling. It’s also a great resource for planning a trip: my Discover tab has almost 400 active stories, including “Road Trip through the Andes” and “Weekend in Bali.”
Ready to record? Click start. The app is GPS-enabled, so until you press stop—whether it be in an hour or in a month—the app will record your journey. You can stash your phone and carry on with exploring, knowing that your routes through hidden neighborhoods are still being stored in the app. See something cool? Whip out your phone and click the “+” on the camera, video camera, microphone, or note icon. This lets you add a visual, audio or written memory to your journey.
You can even opt for the entry to be shared with your followers live, via email or social media platforms. LiveTrekker’s real-time approach to planning and documenting your journeys eliminates grunt work while maximizing your recall rate. Rather than retreating to your hotel to update your blog every night, LiveTrekker ensures that you complete your historian duties as you go—giving you way more time to relax and explore. You can always go back and edit your trip journal, adding, altering or deleting content as the mood strikes you.
LiveTrekker’s app has a separate “Blog” tab if you’d like to document your trip in this traditional format or write longer entries to accompany your map. A blog offers a space for deeper thoughts and descriptive details, or perhaps insights that were developed in hindsight. A blog can be shared separately from your map if you would like one to be more public and one more private.
Our Favorite Part:
LiveTrekker records any trip in spectacular fashion, even if it’s close to home. We can’t rave enough about the distance traveled and elevation gained totals. While this seems like a simple feature, it brings a great sense of accomplishment and quantifiable bragging rights. Steps add up, especially when planes and trains are involved. We even love using the app for casual hikes, since it has fitness tracker capabilities—plus its photo integration helps us remember where the Kodak moments and panoramic lookouts occur along the trail.
We also love that our scrapbook is complete by the time we board the plane home. The finished map looks like Google Earth (zoom and toggle between topographical or satellite views) with clickable lines and pinpoints featuring visual and audio memories recorded along the way. Looking through this beautiful, captivating collage feels like traveling through time. Since the app makes real-time documentation so simple, it catches details that may slip your mind as time passes. And don’t worry—even if your phone doesn’t survive your trip, your experiences will be safely stored in the cloud.
