Hiking Backpack Packing Pointers and Precautions
Forgotten backpack and camping essentials can wreck a hiking or camping trip. Ignoring safety precautions can be dangerous. Planning is another critical aspect of hiking and camping experiences. Inspect your hiking backpack before each trip for torn seams or pulls that could create havoc on the trail. Make needed repairs and do preventive maintenance.
Create a hiking or camping backpack checklist of essentials and safety checks. Include important logistic spares such as extra split rings, clips and clevis pins. Don’t overlook first aid supplies and medications for common illness like indigestion or diarrhea. (Note: Backpacker Magazine offers a sample gear checklists for all types of outdoor pursuits.) Assemble all of the items on your checklist and make the most of organizers that come with your backpack to pack smart. Make sure you have plenty of water and food. And, don’t forget to tuck a few luxury items in, such as a good bottle of vino or favorite snack indulgences.
Once your backpack is loaded, ensure that all straps and belts are adjusted to fit your body correctly. Can you move about freely, bend, twist, turn and shift your weight without losing your balance? Does anything feel uncomfortable? If so, remedy the problem now.
Enjoy your trip. Don’t over-do it. Stop before fatigue becomes debilitating. Use common sense safety precautions at all times. Take lots of photographs and notes on how to improve future hiking experiences.
