New Years is a time to celebrate, but it’s also a time when many people make resolutions to start and stop doing things. The most popular New Year’s Resolutions every year are lose weight/get fit, stop smoking or drinking, and save more/pay down debt. While that’s probably something you already knew, you may not have known how many popular New Years Resolutions can be tied to bags.

Have you seen Mantracker on the Science Channel? Well, if so, you know that very few prey make it to the finish line. Mantracker almost always seems to get his man (or woman).

As I watched that last few episodes, it occurred to me that while the prey’s skills and tricks are a huge factor in helping them elude their hunter, the bag they carry can also make or break their trek through the wilderness. Some people don’t carry enough water and end up cramping up. Others carry backpacks in bright colors so they don’t blend with their surroundings.

It’s snowing today here in Denver. It’s not our first snow. Nope, we got dumped on a few weeks back. But it’s starting to look like we’ll get plenty of the white stuff this season which is great for our local economy (ski tourism).

It’s Back To School season! As if you couldn’t tell by all the ads out there. So instead of talking about the latest backpack deals or praising the virtues of a particular backpack brand, I’d like to take a different approach to the subject.

Working here at eBags, I’ve come to know the website very well. In fact, I’ve found some pretty interesting and unique products available. Can anyone say coffee carrier? Lately, there has been a lot of discussion around the eBags office regarding wheeled vs. un-wheeled or traditional carry backpacks. It appears the office seems to be divided into two camps; those who much prefer the convenience of a wheeled backpack, and those who prefer the style and selection of a carry backpack. Although I will not reveal which side I have taken, I thought this a good topic to discus. Therefore, let’s visit the pros and cons of wheeled backpacks.

Pros: Wheeled backpacks are becoming more and more popular. Why? Because they are EASY! No one wants to drag around 50 pounds of anything on their back. Many students and business professionals have found that rolling their packs is much easier then carrying them. This is especially true for younger kids who have a long walk to the bus stop. Additionally, many of us use our backpacks for travel. Being able to simply roll your backpack through an airport can be truly convenient. On another note, I read that in their life time 8 out of 10 Americans will suffer from back pain. That’s a lot of people! A great way to help reduce the likelihood of back pain is to NOT CARRY THINGS ON YOUR BACK. Rolling backpacks are a great answer to this problem.

Cons: Rolling backpacks do have some drawbacks. First, if you ever do plan on carrying them on your back, rolling backpacks weight a lot more than traditional backpacks. This not good for younger kids who may want to both roll and carry their packs. Rolling backpacks also have limited selection and are typically not considered as trendy or stylish as traditional backpacks. So for those of you who have an exact style or color in mind, you may not find a rolling backpack that meets your needs. Also, rolling backpacks are not as versatile as traditional backpacks, in the sense that you cannot have a rolling backpack that you use for, say, both school and skiing.

Summary: On the upside rolling backpacks are great for long distance carriers and for those of us who have or are afraid of developing back problems. They are also convenient for travel. On the downside, rolling backpacks weight more than traditional backpacks, and are not as stylish or versatile.

All in all, wheeled or un-wheeled backpacks are simply a matter of personal preference. But fill us in! We would love to hear your opinion on the matter!
