As a new mom, I’m always amazed at the stuff my baby finds fascinating. Any parent will tell you that babies love to touch and pick up (and put in their mouths) just about anything. So I wasn’t surprised to see my baby playing with my handbag, my wallet, and my diaper bag when she was within reach of them.
But while babies love exploring many types of new things, they tend to gravitate toward items they can grab with their small hands and objects with visually interesting details: bright colors, shiny parts, textures, and handles. Since bags also have some if not many of these features, it’s no wonder why babies love bags.
So I thought it would be fun to take a look at what bags babies just can’t resist looking at and playing with. Comment on this post and tell us if you agree, disagree, or if we missed something. Or share your baby/bag story with us.
Chain Handle Bags: Chain handles aren’t just an eye-catching trend in fashion circles. Babies can’t resist grabbing the shiny chain links which are both visually interesting, sometimes cool to the touch, and fun to run their hands over. Added bonus: A handle is a great means for waving the bag around and they make a noise when they hit other surfaces.
Colorful Bags: Ever notice how colorful baby toys are? Babies love color. And babies love colorful bags. If you’ve got a bag with more than 2 colors, or better yet, a rainbow of hues, you’ve got the perfect bag for baby to gaze at.
Textured Bags: Babies love to touch…everything. So when they find something that feels interesting to the touch, they love to touch it over and over again. Put a textured bag like one with perforations, mesh, embossing, quilting, or mixed media in front of a baby and they just won’t want to stop playing with it.
Beaded Bags: The perfect combination of texture and color, beaded bags are like a magnet for babies. They attract the eye and those little hands.
Patterned Bags: The only thing better to look at than bright colors is a bag with a brightly colored pattern. Florals, stripes, paisleys, etc. all make for a visually interesting bag and something babies just can’t help but look at.
Mini Bags: Little hands can easily pick up little things. So a small bag is something babies love to pick up, wave around, and bang on surfaces. From clutches and diminutive minaudieres to small crossbody bags, it’s like mini bags were made for babies.
Top Handle Bags: Just like handles make carrying more convenient, top handles make picking up and waving bags around easier for babies. A top handle is like an invitation for babies to grab your bag.
Canvas Totes: Parents love totes because they have large open compartments that fit just about anything. Babies love totes because they have large open compartments ideal for putting over your head and for exploring inside. The lightweight design of canvas totes makes them easy to pick up, fold over, and generally play with.
Faux Fur Bags: My daughter loves to pet our dog; probably because he’s soft and furry. I’m sure if I put a faux fur bag in front of her, she’d do the same, and who could blame her? Faux fur is soft to the touch and made to feel like real fur. For those reasons, faux fur just had to make this list.
Metallic Bags and Shiny Bags: Last but not least, babies can’t resist shiny things. Shiny bags like metallic bags and even patent bags quickly attract babies’ eyes while gleaming keyrings, dangles, and other metal embellishments attract those little hands.
Please note that this is meant to be a fun list. Bags are not toys. Please never let your baby play with bags unsupervised and always keep plastic bags out of reach.
